Norman Conquest: new pictures posted
I have added pictures of some David Clayton castings of Norman Conquest figures - King Harold, and unarmoured fyrdmen with axe and cudgel.

Painted Norman infantry
I have just been painting Norman Conquest infantry and they illustrate a couple of dilemmas. Firstly, the unarmoured archers and spear men both have headgear which could either be pointed helmets or cloth hats - I'm not sure which. I have painted them as helmets but suspect this may be wrong - can anyone comment? Also very few of the spear men's weapons are complete, so I suspect I will replace these. This is the same problem as I have with the accompanying cavalry. I only have a few (less than ten) Saxons, so I think I will try to do these before tackling the Norman cavalry.

Norman Conquest "Figures received" pictures from Miniature Warfare
John Tunstill published photographs of new figures received for review in Miniature Warfare magazine. The figures here are NCN 1 William the Conqueror, and NCN 3 Standard Bearer with the Pope's Sacred Banner(I think).

The Norman Conquest 1066
In deference to Roy and the price I have just paid on e-bay for thse figures, I have amended slightly some text on the home page of this site.
These are very rare figures and I was prompted to pay a collectors' price for them so I could make pictures avaialble on the blog. Most lances have been removed at some point from the mounted figures, presumably with the intention of replacing them with more robust wire ones, and the mounted standard bearer unfortunately seems to have lost the Pope's Sacred Banner - not a good move, you would think. The English standard bearer is a fine figure, as is Duke William. I regret no King Harold was included, and also particularly would have liked to see the Fyrdman described as being in flowing cloak and armour with sword - sounds inspiring.
The excerpt from the Bayeux Tapestry above shows the point when William, having been thrown from his horse, raises his helmet so his men can see he is still alive. Next to him is Count Eustace, carrying what is thought to be the Pope's Sacred Banner - probably Marcus Hinton's inspiration for these two figures.

Both armies can be divided into two distinct groups. The Normans consisted of armoured and mounted knights and men-at-arms who were the elite of the Norman force, the remainder were archers on foot and mainly unarmoured.
The English elite were the Royal Bodyguard who wore armour like the Normans but, in common with all English troops, fought on foot only. Then there was the Fyrd or Militia who in the main were unarmoured and were less skilful and disciplined than the magnificent Houscarls.
