Notes on the Polish Army, Duchy of Warsaw 1807-1815 part 1, Miniature Warfare August 1968

A little off topic as not specifically Hinton Hunt related, but in 1968 where else would you have got the figures for a Polish army? This two part series from Miniature Warfare, written by W J Fiedler, aimed to help those wishing to build such an army for the Napoleonic Wars. I must admit that the Poles are among my favourite Hinton Hunt Napoleonics. I have a sizeable number and at some point I must try to organise them. I hope these articles will help.

Norman Conquest "Figures received" pictures from Miniature Warfare

John Tunstill published photographs of new figures received for review in Miniature Warfare magazine. The figures here are NCN 1 William the Conqueror, and NCN 3 Standard Bearer with the Pope's Sacred Banner(I think).

Colonial and Crimean "Figures received" pictures from Miniature Warfare

The pictures here are of Crimean War figures and Colonial subjects (a British Colonial infantryman has crept into the top row of Crimean figures).

Napoleonic "Figures received" pictures from Miniature Warfare

These Napoleonic figures include Bavarians, a British sailor, Highlanders, Austrian Jagers, Brunswick infantry, and personality figures.

More Peter Gilder pictures from Miniature Warfare

These photographs from Miniature Warfare September 1970 were taken by Peter Gilder.

In the first picture, captioned The Imperial Guard move forward, I suspect the Mamelukes are Garrison and I have the feeling the infantry at bottom right may be Minifigs. I am not sure about the Cuirassiers - they may be Garrison too?

Rather a surfeit of staff, including two generals, the Emperor, Poniatowski etc... A tempting artillery target if only the Duke would countenance it.

Callan, from Miniature Warfare May 1970

One of the things that strikes you reading through old copies of Miniature Warfare is the impact on the hobby of a number of feature films. Miniature Warfare had big spreads with publicity photos of films including Patton - Lust for Glory, Cromwell, War and Peace, and the Charge of the Light Brigade (which coincided with the release of Minifigs S Range Crimean figures, or possibly vice-versa).

Although there is a famous wargaming scene in the Callan movie, using ACW figures and scenery provided by Peter Gilder, the pictures from this issue of Miniature Warfare are from an episode of the television series. Some of you may recognise the cover picture (minus background) from the home page of Vintage 20mil.

The caption for the front cover picture reads: "Actor Edward Woodward on the set of Thames television's studios at Teddington admiring some Hinton Hunt French cavalry, part of the collection of Mike Stephenson." They look like dismountable series hussars to me. It is hard to make out the figures in the pictures of the game itself, but they are Napoleonic - hard to work out who the French are fighting, though.

I particularly like the umpire's tent in the first of the pictures of the game. Perhaps this could be revived for competitions?

More pictures from Miniature Warfare

Confusingly captioned British Waterloo Square, this picture from Miniature Warfare February 1971 shows French infantry and artillery. The figures are Hinton Hunt Light Infantry Voltigeurs and Foot Artillery of the Guard, S Range Line Infantry, and (I think) Minifigs 20mm/Alberken Grenadiers.

Peter Gilder Hinton Hunt pictures from Miniature Warfare

While looking for pictures such as these in John Tunstill's Miniature Warfare magazine, I also came across a series of articles of which I have no memory at all by Peter Gilder, called In the Grand Manner. This set out to describe the planning of a big Waterloo refight in Hull in 1970; it seems to have petered out after four articles, mainly on terrain. The series was illustrated by black and white photographs of Gilder's terrain and Hinton Hunt troops. I have posted this series of articles over on Vintage Wargaming.
