ACW officer conversions - more from FN 11

A while ago I came across a rather nice ACW officer, converted from FN 11, French Napoleonic Line Infantry Officer in greatcoat. I also found I had two further mystery ACW officers and had a discussion with Roy, who said these too were based on the same figure. I was not so sure but now I have had the chance to compare them with an original FN 11 I can see that as always Roy was 100% right. The figures have been converted, then mastered and cast. The first picture shows the first conversion mentioned, with kepi, while the other two figures are in the second shot.

ACW Infantry conversion #1 Union infantry

This picture includes two more types of "dodgy casting". One is a straight home cast version of the standard US 6 Infantry charging figure. The other (figures on left of picture) are converted BN 5, British Napoleonic line infantry charging. The give away here is the shape of the pack. It looks like whoever made these figures converted one of the British Napoleonic figures, essentially either by remodelling the shako into a kepi, or by replacing the head with an ACW one - I haven't looked closely enough to decide which - then used this as a master to produce many copies. The partly formed bases of most of these figures are a telltale sign of home casting or pirating. They do provide a good approximation for the wargaming table of the intended figure.

ACW cavalry conversion #4 Union officer

This is a one piece casting with separate arm, which means I think it is likely to be FN 44 Lancer of the Guard. The horse has been remounted on a different figure's base. In stripping down and refurbishing I found the head is plastic, probably an Airfix one from the ACW artillery or Wagon Train sets. I have regluedthe horse to its base and now need to identify a donor arm for the figure. My normal procedure is to spray figures with plastidip, a rubberised coating which dries matt and prevents any flaking of paint from plastic figures. This has the added benefit of strengthening the joins of any converted parts.

ACW cavalry conversion #3 Union cavalry

These cavalry are similar conversions, homecast or copied figures to the Confederate cavalry in the following post. They are separate riders mounted on homecast copies of Hinton horses -I am not at the moment sure which. The horses have carbine stocks and swords cast on; I added barrels to the carbines from thick wire. The two figures in the middle of the front row are US 18 artilery drivers modified, I think.

ACW cavalry conversion #2 Confederate cavalry

Here is a second unit of "dodgy casting" Confederate cavalry. These seem to have used the same separate carbine arms as the first set, but are also separate riders, mounted on home cast horses which are copies of a Hinton Hunt original (haven't identified what yet). These have carbines and swords cast onto them. The carbines have no barrels so I have added these with thick wire. The two figures on the left of the photo are firstly (I think) a homecast figure from US 18 artillery driver, and secondly a one piece casting figure, probably Napoleonic, as yet unidentified
